Now Velez, he was a cook at elementary school. When we had our open house, I went over there and said, “Senor. Would you cook a large beef roast for me, slice it into less than a quarter of an inch, and cut it into squares about like this. So, he did, and it was unbelievable what he did. And I said, “Would you bake little buns about this size?” And he said, “Yes”. He said,” how many do you want?” I said, two thousand. “Sure. Yes.”
He wouldn’t accept a penny for doing this, except for the bread. That was a penny a piece. So, I said, “Well I’m going to pay you for the ingredients. He said, “Oh no.” I said, “Why not?” He said, “It was for a good cause.” He was the nicest person.
And we had hundreds of people at this place. Oh my God. And we had it on Memorial Weekend because a lot of people were transfering right after that – the military – and a lot of teachers were heading out right after that.
I went through 12 gallons of rum, and then a lot of people brought bottles. They were mostly gone. We had cases of Coke, you know. Coke was the most expensive thing we had. Oh, and a garbage can full of ice. And you guys were bartenders.
