Summer of 62 – we hadn’t been there very long. I got a, one of those National Science things.
(Joe) What was it? A grant?
Yeah, same thing I had for the academic year. See, I got one in 58 for the summer, 8 weeks, at Cedar Falls. And then, 59 I got one in Chemistry and Geology at the university of North Dakota. And then we got that, accidentally, year one back at Iowa. And then 62 while we were in Puerto Rico we got one at Interamerican, so that was good.
(Cathy) It was a grant, you said.
Oh, they paid you. Yeah, you got 8 graduate credits and they paid you a thousand dollars or more.
See, all that came about because of Sputnik. Sputnik went up in 58, or so, and the National Science Foundation exploded, and greatly enhanced science and mathematics teaching. Like, we had 50, in the academic year, 50 guys, and I got paid more that year then if I had stayed in Perham and taught the year. It wasn’t much, but it was more than that, anyway. 5 or 6 thousand dollars.
