Interview on Arriving in Germany with Fran Smith – 1972

May 24, 2013

(Germany wasn’t like PR. We never saw a dead dog by the road, ever.)

So, we go to this high school, I did, Cay and I went to this high school and were interviewed by, what was his name, Fran Smith, the prinicpal, Lowell Peeper was in England so he couldn’t interview me. I had a job, I knew that before we got there. So, this guy is dumber than a door nail. Here Fran has an office off the main office, he’s assistant principal. His office was about the size of this davenport over to here. So, we’re in there, didn’t realize but that office was exactly what he should have had, maybe smaller. He said, well, what have you been doing? You know, this kind of an interview, as thought it made any difference. I was going to be a biology teacher there, and an ecology teacher … so, Cay said, well, what do you mean? What, huh, what business, what have you been doing. I said, well, I’ve been busy. I’ve been teaching evenings for years, and I have been in 2 graduate programs, and I have done this, and we were out in the Pacific. I said, I was at the University of Puerty Rico, Mayaguez. I was in the doctoral program in marine sciences. I said, I was in the doctoral program because if I wasn’t in it I couldn’t take some of the classed that I wanted. Had to be enrolled in it. I said, I wasn’t serious about a graduate degree in it, I just wanted to take some classed that I could use.

Marine science, he says, that’s too bad we have no use for that here.

How damn dumb can you get? So anyway, I thought Cay was going to pop our of her chair. So, that was our baptism with him, and huh, later on he transferred to … where were Jim and Lois? … anyway, that’s were Jim ended up getting assigned. So we – Lois, Jim, Cay and I went over there – and he was the assistant principal. I knew that. I was just so pleased he wasn’t with us anymore. So I walked in, and I said, Fran! I want you to meet Jim, one of your new teachers. A coach, PE, and a good one. And this is Cay’s sister, Lois.

Great, good to meet you all. He said, Jerry, I did it again. I said, what did you do, Fran … because I used to help him with registrations and stuff .. get things straight. I scheduled physics and calculus the same hour.

You did?

Yeah, and he said, alegebra the same hour.

I said, well that’s a little conflict there, Fran, since you have the same students in the same classes all the same time. Huh, I think you better get that straight.

He siad, I think it’s too late.

I said, well, have a nice year. Step 1 you screwed up …

And his wife was a, aagh … anyway, Joan was the librarian. She had all of her spices in alphabetical order, in the house, and all kinds of things. And she bought his clothe. Leisure suits, chartruese, blue, this and that.

And … John Hunt said, god damn … what did he call jim … parakeet. He said, he’s a god damn parakeet.

Oh man, I’ll tell you.

And then, they wanted us to play bridge …
